Dominate Your Competition’s PPC Campaign

by kyle on December 4, 2007

Is this something you have often wanted to do? Spent many hours thinking about all the wonderful strategies you are going to employ to gain traffic and build your list? Then when it gets late into the evening or afternoon, you begin to stall and begin peeking at your competition and their PPC campaigns.. You sit and stare at the screen when google returns the top sponsored results..

You wonder if your direct competitor who has the top spot for a given set of keywords at google is doing 2X 3X or tenfold better then you. You then consider a possible hike in your bids for a higher rank..Maybe you OVER bid on this campaign and particular ad you have running. What does this do? Makes GOOGLE more $ and they don’t need that… Affiliates and product developpers NEED it..

So what to focus on? Here’s what you focus on. QUALITY Landing pages. Not AUTO-Generated ones, not cloaked pages, not anything but a quality informational page that is useful to the end user (the potential customer you are trying to get)

Ok that’s all fine and dandy but what about the competitor who owns the top spot on the PPC campaign that you have running? What else does this guy have bids on? Well theres a technique to get that information. I am going to provide a link to the results of yesterdays Reverse Google Search on the keyword “Template” with the Boxedart site…This is an extension of what you saw with respect to the Top sponsor (boxedart.com) and their bidding habits based on the keyword TEMPLATE. (yesterdays link to the zip file with the csv)

Ok.. so now that you have looked at the CSV file, you see that boxedart guys like to bid on a lot more keywords then just that TEMPLATE keyword.. In fact they are actively bidding on approx 192 keywords and phrases.. There are a LOT of Organic words on that list, but those are the “natural” keywords that their SEO campaign have brought it.. We will address those later. For now we are looking at the Adwords PPC data.

So they have that many keywords bringing them in traffic. Some phrases they are #1 for.. Some they are #48 and many they are all in between.

Let’s take a closer look now. For all the google adwords URL’s, there are only a handful that the main root of the site are bidding on. The majority of them are going to “cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=googlewta&page=http://www.boxedart.com/member/ ” and not the root at all. This simply means that the site is doing one of 2 things.

  1. They are providing a quality landing page for their affiliates (or super affiliates) to keep their CPC down on bids relating to this site
  2. They are simply using this as a tracking method to see the effectiveness of their campaign.. I would assume they would also have serverside statistics enabled to show them graphically what is working and what is not.

Ok now back to what we are going to look closer at… I have chosen to take a look at “WESBITE TEMPLATES”. Here is the data that we KNOW for sure:

-They own position 8…To be #1 at this particular time, it costs $2.73 …So who is in position 1 for “WEBSITE TEMPLATES”? Well this is the next step in uncovering your PPC competition, at another level.

Say for example you were intending initially to go after TEMPLATE and now found new keyphrases like the one mentioned above “website templates”. Well here is a FULL report on what ALL of the keywords that boxedart.com are bidding on, and all of THEIR competitors. This will give you a glance at what their competition is doing and who owns the top spots that they don’t, and so on…Take a look click here for DAY 2 results, 100% free to you!

I am going to come back tomorrow and add more to this, but for now you are sitting with a lot of information on this niche, and maybe now it’s time to post in the comments about words you would like to see examined in this fashion for your own research!

Hey Murray! Here you go man these are the initial results, and kind of “raw” but it will be a list you can scrub down and play with, and you will get a little bit of insider information on your competition when you get your blog off the ground!

http://www.marketingyourwork.com/25daysofxmas/day3/magic.htm

There is results on one of the top guys penguinmagic dot com.. There will be one more follow up to this but pay close attention to the words they have there,… Many are “organic” which means they are part of their natural SEO campaign and they are NOT bid words, or adwords…

Enjoy
